Lithium Polymer Voltage and Pack Configuration

Each Lithium Polymer cell is 3.7 volts. If a battery is wired in series the voltage will increase with each cell, but the capacity remains the same. 1000mAh cells wired all in series would be as follows:

A 1 cell pack = 3.7v 1000mAh
A 2 cell pack = 7.4v 1000mAh
A 3 cell pack = 11.1v 1000mAh
A 4 cell pack = 14.8v 1000mAh

If 1000mAh cells are all wired in parallel then:

A 1 cell pack = 3.7v 1000mAh
A 2 cell pack = 3.7v 2000mAh
A 3 cell pack = 3.7v 3000mAh
A 4 cell pack = 3.7v 4000mAh

Packs are wired in either series only, or a combination of series and parallel. Lithium Polymer pack configuration is denoted, for example like: 3S1P (“3” cells in “series”, in “1” parallel group); so 3S2P (“3” cells in “series”, in consisting of “2” parallel groups) Using 1000mAh cells; the 3S1P would be a 11.1v 1000mAh pack and the 3S2P would be a 11.1v 2000mAh pack.
